I recently was in touch with Richard again. Here is the exchange of emails. Really the only interesting ones to read are his replies.

Hello Richard,

I hope the past two years have been treating you well. I'm emailing you
about the license you included with HoverRace, which is set to expire on
January 1; I was wondering if you would be willing to remove the date
clause so the license never expires.

After you gave us the source code, very few of us had time to work on
it, so it stagnated for about a year and a half. But then, over this
summer, myself and a few others found time again and set up all the
necessary resources for group development. We set up a Trac website
(http://svn.igglybob.com/hoverrace) with SVN, and set some milestones
for the future.

For the newest 1.23 version, we re-wrote the network code to work better
with firewalls, allowed any color depth (not just 8-bit), and allowed
any resolution. In addition, we overhauled the configuration, allowed
larger and taller tracks, and created an automatic track downloader.

Today was actually the release day for 1.23, after significant testing.
If you're interested you can find it at http://www.hoverrace.com.

In the future we plan to overhaul the graphics engine (move it to
OpenGL), port the entire game to Linux, and enhance the game in all
sorts of other ways. The project is starting to gain momentum
(especially with the recent 1.23 release) from old players and new ones
too, so I am looking forward to future releases.

I received a quick reply.

Hi Ryan,

That is nice to see that there is still action around the game. I've even noticed that there was a page about HoverRace on Wikipedia. At first I don't see any problem about removing the date for the license. Let me review the text either today or tomorrow night and then I'll come to you with a more official response.

Thanks to you for keeping the game alive

Talk to you soon

Richard

Later I got this.

Hi Ryan,

I reviewed it and it is ok except for the license version and date. Please use the following.

GrokkSoft HoverRace SourceCode License v1.0, November 29, 2008

I'm verry happy to see that the game is still alive and I'll have to show it to my daughter. Thanks for doing that

Have a good weekend

Richard

Hi Rockafeller,

I am pleased to know you are the one behind hoverrace.com. I have received a few notes from Ryan over the past couple of weeks and I thought there was someone else in charge of the site but I can't remember who it was.

I'm also glad you enjoy the game. I have told Ryan to give you monitor powers due to your excellent behavior but he refused to do so. I might as well prevent him from working on the source just to show him who's in charge.

And no, you cannot kick me from the IMR.

Have a good week

Richard

PS: My daughter thinks you're funny.

Bah...
